About animals

Kurilian Bobtail

Kurilian Bobtail is a short-tail native of Russia. This breed attracts by contrast: the appearance of a lynx coexists with the injustice of a hare, and dog loyalty - with a truly feline nobility.

  • The tail in the form of a pompom is the hallmark of the breed, which was inherited by the "smokers" from their Japanese relatives.
  • There are two varieties of Kurilian Bobtail: short-haired and long-haired.
  • Despite the resemblance to wild cats, representatives of this breed are very sociable and friendly.
  • The “Kuril people” show a truly doglike devotion to the members of the family in which they live. One person often becomes a favorite.
  • Bobtails get along well with children and make strong friendships with them, taking an active part in even the craziest game.
  • Representatives of the breed do not show discontent, being in the company of other pets, however, it is worth keeping them away from decorative rodents and birds.
  • Kurilian Bobtail tend to periodically show independence and self-will, testing the patience of their master for strength.
  • These animals practically do not mark the territory, which makes them ideal for keeping in an apartment.
  • The breed is absolutely unpretentious in care and therefore suitable even for people with minimal experience in keeping cats.

Kurilian Bobtail - that breed which cannot be confused with another. The reasons for this are a short, as if docked, tail and a physique uncharacteristic for cats. No less remarkable is the nature of the bobtail. Calm, peaceful and friendly - this is how their owners speak of these cats. A well-developed hunting instinct is another characteristic feature of the small “lynx”, so the representatives of the breed feel great in the countryside. However, their reputation as skilled predators does not suffer in urban conditions: not a single annoying fly will escape the close attention of the bobtail!

Kurilian Bobtail breed history

The Kuril Islands (namely, the southern part of the archipelago) are the stumbling block of two powers: Japan and Russia. The ownership of these lands has been repeatedly disputed until the Kuril Islands have departed under the wing of the Russian Federation. Together with the territory, the state also gained the right to be considered the birthplace of one of the most remarkable and unique breeds in the world.

According to the point of view of most felinologists, Kurilian bobtail descended from short-tailed cats that have inhabited the archipelago since at least the 18th century. Their ancestors were supposedly wild and appeared as a result of the union of Japanese bobtail and Siberian cats. The history of the appearance of these rocks in the Kuril Islands is no less interesting.

Ancient beliefs of the Land of the Rising Sun indicate that Japanese bobtail were considered a symbol of good luck and therefore were overly patronized by local residents. In addition, these animals were of sacred origin: their ancestors were considered white temple cats, who guarded the shrines of the followers of Buddha. Some bobtail fell into the archipelago along with the Japanese as part of research or military expeditions. Often they were also used as watchmen of the imperial farms where fur animals were bred. Obeying instincts and wanting to break out of the "golden cage", many cats fled into the wild. After several generations, Japanese bobtail acquired new features, trying to adapt to harsh living conditions: the fear of water disappeared, the claws ceased to be drawn into the paw pads, and their owners became larger.

As for the Siberian cats, they came to the Kuril Islands with immigrants. The animals easily made friends with the feral "Japanese", and as a result of this alliance a new breed arose, now known as the Kurilian Bobtail.

It is worth noting that the selection of these animals did not begin immediately. Despite the relatively long-standing appearance of the breed, felinologists drew attention to it only at the end of the 20th century. Until that moment, breeders visited the Kuril Islands and left with the bobtails, mistaking them for their Japanese counterparts. Then no one imagined that adorable short-tailed creatures - something new in an already rich cat world. However, since 1991, everything has changed.

It was then that new representatives of the breed were brought from the Kuril Islands. In October, the first standard of the Kurilian Bobtail was adopted, and the Soviet felinological organization (SFO) played an important role in this. Tatyana Bocharova, observing the selection of cats, came to the conclusion that the short tail is inherited by all animals, which meant the absence of any anomalies in their development. By registering the “smokers” as an independent breed, the Siberian Federal District set itself a new task - to achieve similar recognition among European felinologists.

December 1994 was marked by a seminar at which Russian breeders put forward a proposal to finalize the Kurilian Bobtail breed standard with a view to its recognition by the international organization WCF. The official registration of short-tailed cats took place only a year later, which provoked a sudden outbreak of interest in Europeans to an unusual breed. More and more often in Italy, Germany, Poland and the Czech Republic began to hold cat shows, whose frequent guests were precisely the Kuril Bobtail. By that time, nurseries had already appeared that specialized in breeding two varieties of the breed: long and short-haired. In this case, the first category was divided into individuals with a long and half-long coat.

In 2001, the felinological association of CIS clubs at the coordination meeting further clarified the standard, but it remained unchanged. This prompted the feline organization FIFe to officially register the breed three years after this event. In 2012, the Kuril Bobtail firmly established itself in the lists of the American TICA.

The mid-90s was a turning point in the fate of the breed. From 1995 to this day, the Kuril Bobtail has “captured” more and more territories, winning the hearts of people. These cats are valued in many countries of Europe for their gentleness and good nature, but in their historical homeland, bobtails are popular mainly among hunters and fishermen, largely due to the magnificent instincts of animals. However, this breed is still not as popular as the beloved by many British, Persian or Siamese cats.

Origin of breed

The Kuril Bobtail belongs to the indigenous cat breeds that live on the islands of Kunashir, Iturup. Their ancestors were the Japanese Bobtail, who arrived on the islands about 200 years ago. Under the influence of natural conditions or as a result of assimilation with Siberian cats, a new breed appeared.

In the late 80s of the twentieth century, several breeders of enthusiasts engaged in targeted breeding of the Kuril Bobtail. Already in 1991, the breed standard was adopted. The breed received international recognition in 1994.

The coat, regardless of length, is soft, silky. The undercoat is underdeveloped, spinal hairs are dense. For semi-long-haired smokers are characteristic fur breeches, collar, tassels on the ears.

The colors of the representatives of this breed are not strictly regulated. More often than others:

  • Red with drawings - marble, spotted, brindle.
  • Black is both plain and black and white.
  • Wild - black color with tabby patterns, brindle, spotted, brindle with white.
  • Cream. Wool gently peach color with patterns. Most often spotted, marble, tiger.
  • Blue. Let's say plain, marble tabby, brindle.

The standard does not recognize the colors of colorpoint, chocolate, lilac, abyssinian, faun. Also, variants of these colors with white inclusions are not legalized.

The body is compact, the chest is wide, the croup is raised, the back is slightly curved. Animals, despite their muscularity and squat, are distinguished by grace.

The head is large in trapezoidal shape, the lines are smooth. The muzzle expands at the level of the cheekbones. The chin is slightly rounded wide, the barb are large, the nose is straight. Ears are triangular in shape with rounded tips on which small furry tassels are located.

The eyes are large, round. Bright green or yellow. For cats with white hair and colored van, harlequin, blue or multi-colored eyes are regulated.

Paws in smokers are powerful, medium length, hind legs longer than front ones. The tail is short, similar to a pompom. It forms at least two vertebrae. For short-haired Kurilian Bobtail, its length, taking into account the hair, is from 2 to 7 cm, for semi-long-haired bobtails, from 3 to 12 cm. The tail is individual for each representative of the breed. Conditionally distinguish the types of its formation:

  • Spiral. The tail is formed by vertebrae deformed at an acute angle, their number is from 3 to 14. Outwardly, it resembles a fishing hook.
  • Stump. The tail forms from 2 to 7 vertebrae. They are deformed in such a way that the impression of their motionless connection is created.
  • Broom. This type forms from 2 to 11 vertebrae broken at an obtuse angle.

The defect of the breed is the tail, formed by 5-7 normally formed vertebrae with a “spiral” at the end. Breeders call it "pushed bobtail."

Kuril Bobtail is an active, curious animal. Until old age, they willingly enter into games, participate in household chores.

The hunting instinct in the blood of these cats and cats. They will rid the house of mice, rats, even if they had never encountered them before.

Animals love water, especially games with it. The pet will willingly swim in the bathroom, catch toys from a basin of water or let the waves in its own drinking bowl. But Bobtails are not very fond of swimming, it is better to accustom them to these procedures since childhood.

Cats and cats are attached to the owner, allocate one person from all family members. They miss him, longing for separation, they miss him. They are always ready to accompany the owner in any business, they are happy to go for a walk with him.

Booteyles are similar in character to dogs, they are ready to protect the owner, the territory, are wary of strangers. Often animals warn owners about the danger - short circuit, fire, gas leak.

The pet will be affectionate, friendly with everyone in the family. It will never scratch even a small child. Willingly will play with him, coming up with joint entertainment. Some breeders smoked, noted that the animals act as a nanny. They watch the children, call adults to them, if they cry.

Despite their tenderness, representatives of this breed are quite independent. They do not like to be squeezed, dragged in their arms without their desire. Pets will go to the owner when he wants, and will not be imposed. He will be more likely to sit next to the owner or on his shoulder than on his knees. Smokers especially like cooperative games.

Bottles get along with other pets, taking the position of leader. They get along even with hamsters, parrots, they never hunt them.

Cats and cats are smart, able to think logically, understand human speech. They lend themselves to training. Simple commands - "Aport", "To me", "Give a paw" the pet will master. For training, choose the moments when the animal is located towards them.

Kurilians are easy to educate. It is enough for a kitten to explain a couple of times what cannot be done, he will remember. There are no problems with accustoming to a tray, a sleeping place. If a pet is accustomed to eating only from his bowl, he will not drag from the master's table or beg.

Vengefulness, resentment is not characteristic of these animals. Punished, they will not sneak secretly, but will go after the owner with a delinquent look, asking for forgiveness.

Kuril Bobtail does not meow in the usual sense. They make a large number of other sounds. Animals love to talk with the owner, talk about what happened in his absence. If the owner does not understand what the pet wants, he is able to expressively, changing intonations, explain what is needed. If the cat believes that he was cheated on something, he can howl loudly.

Appearance of the Kuril Bobtail

Representatives of the breed have a very contrasting appearance. Squat growth hides developed and strong muscles, which allows animals to make huge leaps. Kurilian Bobtail are distinguished by a high degree of sexual dimorphism: cats are several times superior to cats in their dimensions. So, their mass is 7.5 and 4-5 kg, respectively.

Kurilian Bobtail is a medium sized breed. The heritage of wild ancestors is equally traced in the appearance of individuals of both breed categories - long and short-haired.

Maintenance and care

Because of their activity, love of jumping and height, the Kuril Bobtail feel more comfortable in a private house. They adapt well to country and rural conditions.

The pet needs an equipped space for games. Special cat fit:

  • mazes
  • trees
  • multi-claw point systems,
  • houses.

Bobtail does not need a lot of toys. A few small balls, fur or rag mice, ropes with candy wrappers are enough for him.

Cats do not mark the territory, which makes their maintenance in the apartment comfortable. Animals are neat, do not scatter filler from the tray.

Shorthair bobtail combed out with a special rubber mitten once a week. Longhaired representatives of the breed are combed twice a week with a metal comb with an average number of teeth or a brush made from natural bristles.

Bobtail shedding abundantly, only when changing “child” wool to “adult”. To speed up the process, the pet is combed out with a fuminator. The procedure takes half an hour.

In subsequent seasonal molts, it is enough to comb the animal with a comb daily. This applies to short-haired and long-haired pets.

Smokers need to be washed as they become soiled. Due to the characteristics of the wool inherited from wild ancestors, they practically do not get dirty. Cats participating in exhibitions are bathed three days before the show.

Shorthair cats are dried with a terry towel, wrapped in it for a quarter of an hour. Longhair pets are dried using a hair dryer. Choose the device with the lowest power and noise. It is included in advance so that the animal gets used to its hum. For drying, choose the average power and temperature.

Claws are cut infrequently, every three, four months. Ears examined every day, cleaned once a week, two. Eyes are cleaned every day if necessary.

Oral care for smokers involves regular brushing. This is done two, three times a week with a special paste.

Animals love to walk. If it is not possible to organize unhindered access of the pet to the street, it is walked on the harbor. Cats carry such walks calmly.

Smokers willingly accompany the owners to fishing or to the country.

Bobtail are distinguished by good health, stamina. They are not prone to colds, they have virtually no genetically-related diseases. Life expectancy is 17 years.

But animals may have difficulty with bowel movements, inflammation of the anus, in the absence of treatment, prolapse of the rectum is possible. To prevent hemorrhoids, they examine the kitten’s butt daily, monitor the stool. When redness, inflammation, cracks, crusts occur, consult a veterinarian.

Treatment will not produce results without revising the animal's diet.

Deworming courses are also part of the prevention of hemorrhoids and related problems.

It will prevent infection of the animal with fleas, ticks, wearing a specially collar.

Representatives of the breed are prone to the appearance of kidney stones (acidic type). This is due to a higher level of Ph urine in these cats (7 - 7.5).

Vaccination against plague and other infectious diseases of the Kuril Islands is carried out per year. Then they are vaccinated against rabies. Revaccination is carried out after 12-18 months.

Head and skull

The head has the shape of an equilateral triangle, the outlines of which are gently rounded (this is especially evident when the animal is standing in profile). In adult bobtail, it looks more like a trapeze, and this is due to the cheeks with outlined and full "pads" for the mustache. The skull is flat.

The Kuril Bobtail is the owner of a rather wide and rounded muzzle. Stop is indicated only formally and practically does not catch the eye. Flat forehead goes into a straight and wide nose of medium length. His lobe is well defined. A strong chin is developed and has smooth outlines visible in profile. The cheekbones of the animal are not as low as those of their Siberian counterparts.

Medium triangles are set high and wide enough. Moreover, the distance between them corresponds to the width of the base of the ear, but in no case can be less. The tips are gently rounded. Long-haired Kurilian bobtail wear an “ornament” on them in the form of small tassels, giving the animals an even greater resemblance to a trot.

The shape is reminiscent of a nut: oval in their upper part and slightly rounded at the bottom. They are noteworthy in that they are slanted in the east, and this gives the look of the animal an exquisite mystery. The eyes are set wide enough and “lie” on the line that runs from the nose to the base of the ears. Pigmentation of the iris is predominantly yellow or green; blue is found in bicolor and white animals. In general, the standard also provides for the mismatch of eye color with the Bobtail color.

Pros and cons of the breed

Breeders distinguish the following advantages of the breed:

  • Activity that persists in adulthood.
  • Devotion to the owner, readiness to follow him, protect him.
  • Independence, unobtrusiveness, combined with gentleness and peaceful disposition.
  • Developed hunting instinct.
  • No aggression - cats get along with other pets, get along with children of any age.
  • Accuracy.
  • Developed intelligence, learning ability, obedience.

Activity, habits of the hunter leave their mark on the character of the Kuril Islands. They feel more comfortable in a private house, with the possibility of regular independent walks.

Among the shortcomings of the breed are:

  • The need for a specially organized space for games.
  • The need to carefully monitor the diet.
  • Pets do not tolerate complete loneliness. They constantly need a companion - an animal or a person.
  • The need for regular walking.

The Kuril Islands are suitable for people who often travel outside the country, living in a private house. The cat is suitable for families with children.

Jaws and teeth

The presence of strong jaws is determined by the lifestyle of the feral progenitors of the breed. Existing in the wild, cats were forced to independently earn their own food. Tick bite, full dentition. It consists of incisors, fangs, premolars and molars.

Not long enough, strong muscles are felt under thin skin. Due to the thick coat it seems a bit overweight.

The Kurilian Bobtail has a dense and strong body, which at any time is ready to demonstrate flexibility unexpected for the animal. Muscle does not weigh down the appearance of a cat. The body has an elongated shape. The chest is developed, the back line is distinguished by an arcuate bend. The croup of the animal is slightly raised.

The Kuril Bobtail is notable for its short and slightly curved tail, which rises above the line of the back. Its length varies between 3-8 cm, however, in long-haired individuals, it can reach 13 cm. Four species of the animal’s tail are distinguished.

  • The “stump” consists of deformed and firmly connected to each other vertebrae (no more than eight). It can be straight or slightly bent down in the manner of a hook.
  • "Spiral" includes 5-10 vertebrae. This type of tail is one of the most characteristic of the breed.
  • The “panicle” consists of the same number of vertebrae as the “spiral”. It has a straight shape, one third of the length of the usual tail.
  • The “retracted bobtail” includes 5-7 vertebrae, the line of which is twisted into an impromptu loop closer to the end of the tail. It is considered a breed defect.

The shape of the pompom is not regulated by the standard. His grooming is permissible and even preferable.

Feeding Features

After a year, the pet is fed two, three times a day. A kitten under the age of 4 months is 6 times older than 4 times a day.

More representatives of this breed is suitable for a natural diet. Its basis is lean meat (veal, chicken, turkey, beef).

The meat is frozen before giving to the pet. It accounts for 90% of all products received by the cat.

It is supplemented with a small amount of porridge. Buckwheat, oatmeal and rice are suitable, which is boiled only in milk, so as not to cause constipation. I also add some boiled vegetables (except potatoes) to the meat.

Once a week give:

  • Offal - heart, stomachs, chicken or beef kidneys.
  • Sour-milk products - sour cream, cottage cheese, cheese are allowed only unsalted.
  • Chicken or beef liver.

Twice a week, menus are supplemented with quail eggs or chicken yolk. The diet includes ocean lean fish, which is also given no more than twice every seven days. Pre-boil it for 5 minutes.

It is forbidden to feed cats from the master's table. This can lead to digestive upset, provoke the development of hemorrhoids.

If you plan to feed your pet industrial feed - choose only the super premium class. Kittens do not recommend giving dry food. Replace them with wet ones.

A balanced diet is the key to cat health. With proper nutrition, the risk of developing constipation, inflammation of the anus is minimal.

To avoid obstruction of the intestine due to the accumulated lick of wool, the animal is given special pastes. They will be replaced by sprouted "cat" grass, sold in veterinary pharmacies.

Regardless of the type of nutrition, the animal is given a course of vitamin and mineral supplements twice a year.

The hind legs of the bobtail are slightly longer than the front. Embossed muscles are the main reason for the phenomenal jumping of animals. Compact paws have a rounded shape, fingers tightly compressed. The claws do not retract and, when in contact with the surface, make a clattering sound, more characteristic of dogs than cats.

Wool cover

The type of coat “smoker” depends on its belonging to a particular breed species.

  • Shorthair bobtail - owner of thin and short hair. It is permissible to increase its length on the tail, as well as on the rear and lower sides of the body of the animal.
  • The long-haired bobtail, as the name implies, has long or medium-long hair. As in the case of the short-haired fellow, this Kurilian bobtail has a more elongated coat on the lower and rear torso. In addition, it is notable for its “collar”, “panties” and trot tassels at the tips of the ears.

Both varieties of the breed are distinguished by a thick undercoat.

Kurilian Bobtail is remarkable in that its color can be almost anything. The most common options are smoky, tabby (tabby), bi- and tricolor. The breed standard does not recognize Burmese, Abyssinian, purple and chocolate colors.

Possible defects

Among the defects of the breed, the Kuril Bobtail is distinguished:

  • forelegs of insufficient length,
  • deep-set and / or bulging eyes,
  • excessively short or long tail,
  • pronounced bending of the back line,
  • pointy ears
  • high "fit" cheekbones,
  • lack of undercoat,
  • elongated torso
  • narrowed head.

Disqualifying defects include:

  • short tail without bends and kinks,
  • tail exceeding 13 cm in length,
  • undescended one or two testicles,
  • mucosal erosion in the anus,
  • spinal deformity,
  • Amputated Claws
  • lack of tail
  • deafness.

Kurilian Bobtail Character

In contrast to the outward resemblance to a wild and impregnable trot, the representatives of the breed are distinguished by genuine friendliness and friendliness. This greatly accelerates the rapprochement of cats with new owners. The Kuril Bobtail will not sit, staring, under the dresser and snort irritably in response to your attempts to get it out of temporary shelter. On the contrary: these animals love to communicate and actively get involved in joint games with family members. “Kurilians” are often called dogs in a feline body, as they are happy to bring toys and balls thrown by the master’s dexterous hand.

By the way, with the family at the Kurilian Bobtail a very reverent relationship develops. For representatives of this breed there is nothing more important than close people who give them sincere love and care. The animal will protect the family in which it lives, exclusively "dog-like": becoming in a formidable stance and warning meowing. At the same time, the bobtail will especially patronize one person whom he considers his master. If you managed to occupy this honored pedestal in the heart of a furry guard, the pet will follow on the heels, communicating in its own language and taking an active part in your life.

Kuril Bobtail is the best suited for families with children. An animal will never intentionally scratch a baby, but, on the contrary, will endow it with excessive "mustachioed" guardianship. The “Kurilets” will not show aggression even if the child accidentally pulls his tail or ear. Instead of hissing and resentment for the whole day, the bobtail will gladly involve your child in a game of hide and seek or demonstrate a recently learned trick that will certainly cause a sincere children's laugh.

Representatives of the breed get along well with other pets. A cat or a dog doesn’t matter: the Kuril Bobtail will find a common language with both a serious Maine Coon and a playful dachshund. However, it is categorically not recommended to keep decorative birds and rodents in the same house with the bobtail. A waking up hunting instinct that is not timely can turn into a tragedy, and your attachment to an animal - grief over a lost feathered or furry friend.

Simultaneously with meekness and good naturedness, this breed is distinguished by its wayward and independent character, as many owners of Kurilian bobtail say so. Animals do not like to sit on their hands for a long time, depicting a plush toy, and will soon try to leave the heated place. In the absence of proper attention from the owner, the “smokers” begin to live by their own rules and soon consider themselves the rightful owners of the territory, namely your apartments. At the same time, it will not be easy to overthrow the short-tailed usurper. Even the slightest glimpse of luck will soon turn into a defeat for you: the pet will begin to protest. Spoiled things, torn blinds or curtains, an upturned sugar bowl - and this will not be limited to the vendetta of the Kurilian Bobtail.

Think your pet is overly lazy and less and less involved in games? Take time off at work and go with the animal to the country, where it will appear in front of you in a completely different guise. An artful hunter in the blink of an eye will displace home lump from the Kurilian bobtail. Representatives of the breed are especially active in the fresh air: they track the prey for several hours without closing their eyes, fight with neighboring cats for free territory, poke their curious nose into every remote corner of the house, making a purring sound like a bird's trill.

Parenting and training

The Kuril Bobtail are the owners of a developed intellect that allows animals to understand the meaning of over a thousand words! Raising a pet is not difficult: the main thing is to correctly determine the boundaries of the permissible. Do not raise your hand at the cat, because there are other ways to tell your pet about your discontent. A strict tone is enough. This tactic also works if you want to stop the bobtail from inappropriate actions. The word "impossible" will certainly prevent undesirable consequences.

If the pet nevertheless escaped your close attention and cheated, conduct an educational conversation as soon as possible. Otherwise, the bobtail will not understand what exactly he had time to foul.

Upon reaching a certain age, “smokers” begin to check the owner for strength, making attempts to take a leading position in the house. At this stage of education, you will need the ability to adequately respond to the behavior of the animal and make it clear that you do not plan to cede leadership to the wayward fluffy friend.

The rest of the education of the Kurilian Bobtail is not difficult, especially for people with a solid character. It’s also not difficult to train pets to use the tray and scratching post as intended.

Representatives of this breed are easy to train. Their inquiring mind allows you to learn new tricks and learn the skills of their tailed counterparts. Turn the training process into an exciting game - and soon the bobtail will delight you with brilliant execution of teams!

Care and maintenance

Kurilian Bobtail does not need careful care - and this is another plus in favor of the breed. Even long-haired bobtail do not cause unnecessary inconvenience to the owners.

Since the undercoat of cats is moderately developed, the coat is almost never tangled, and the process of combing the Kuril Bobtail does not become a daily hard labor. Once or twice a week is enough. It is recommended to purchase a special brush with metal teeth or a glove with silicone growths to remove dead hair. When combing, adhere to the direction of hair growth.

Bathing for bobtail is one of the most beloved ways to spend time, but do not abuse it: the skin becomes dry, and the rest of the hair is thinned. Using special mild shampoos and conditioners will not save the situation. You should only bathe your pet if it gets dirty. Type warm water into a basin or sink, and then put a cat there. Apply shampoo to the coat, carefully distribute it over the entire body of the Kuril Bobtail and rinse. After bath procedures, the pet must be thoroughly dried. For short-haired cats, a cocoon from a towel is perfect, but a long-haired one will need a hairdryer.

From their ancestors, the Kuril bobtail inherited the inability to fully retract the claws. For this reason, they grind perfectly during the walk of the pet, and when it interacts with the clawfish. However, to get a special device for their shortening still does not interfere. Cut off only the tips, otherwise damage thin vessels.

Do not disregard your pet's eyes. They need to be washed several times a week, using a flap of clean, lint-free cloth or cotton wool moistened with a special tool (it can be purchased at a pet store). Rubbing your eyes, make hand movements from their outer corner to the inner. Bobtail ears should be examined with a similar frequency, wiping them with a cotton pad soaked in a special lotion.Otherwise, sulfur will accumulate in the ears, which in the future can lead to the development of infectious diseases.

As for oral care, it’s enough to brush your cat’s teeth once a week. Moreover, the use of "human" pastes is strictly prohibited. Get a special nozzle on your finger to greatly facilitate the procedure. Do not forget that in case of emergency you can use a regular toothbrush.

Representatives of this breed are extremely unpretentious in food, but this does not mean that you can feed your pet leftovers from the table. For a Kurilian Bobtail show class regularly participating in exhibitions, it is best to purchase premium food. For animals of the “Breed” and “Pet” categories, the usual food is suitable, combined with natural food, in particular, with boiled meat.

Do not include in the diet of the Kuril Bobtail:

  • some vegetables: potatoes, beans, eggplant,
  • fish (exception - low-fat marine),
  • raw and fried meat,
  • bakery products,
  • dairy,
  • pork and lamb
  • tubular bones
  • smoked meats
  • sweets.

There should always be filtered fresh water in the pet's bowl.

Health and Diseases of the Kuril Bobtail

From the Siberian ancestors, cats inherited good health, which rarely causes the owners extra trouble. Specific or genetic diseases in this breed are not observed, but individual diseases are still common precisely among the Kurilian Bobtail. Among them:

  • cracks and inflammation of the mucous membrane of the anus,
  • rectal prolapse,
  • urolithiasis disease,
  • hemorrhoids.

Excellent animal immunity does not at all preclude the development of infectious and parasitic diseases. Regular vaccinations and visits to the veterinary clinic are the guarantee of your pet's health and longevity.

How to choose a kitten

The purchase of a kitten of the Kuril Bobtail breed is a crucial step that requires intuition and attention from you! It is important to notice among the frolic kittens of the one who will sink into the soul. At the same time, one should not listen to the words of the breeder, nor to the advice of friends and relatives: this is your pet, therefore, you need to focus only on your premonitions.

The ideal age for a Kurilian Bobtail to buy is three months. It was at this time that the baby begins to show independence and gradually weaned from maternal care. In addition, the three-month-old “smoker” already has a fairly balanced psychological health, so it quickly gets used to new family members.

If the pedigree of the future pet plays an important role, ask the breeder to acquaint you with the necessary documentation or, more preferably, with the parents of the babies. This is one of the easiest ways to figure out what to expect from your bobtail. The breeder is not talkative and does not show a desire to talk about his wards as much as possible? This is an alarming sign: it means that he has something to hide from such curious and persistent customers like you.

When choosing a kitten should focus on his behavior among his brothers. Is the kid active and cheerful, gladly gets involved in the game and shows a healthy curiosity towards you? This is your pet! Refrain from buying lethargic and shy kittens: in the future this can turn into unpleasant consequences.

How much does a Kuril bobtail

As with the rest of the breeds, the ideal place to purchase Kurilian Bobtail is nurseries that specialize in breeding this breed. The price of a charming baby starts at 8,000 rubles, the upper bar is limited to an amount of 20,000 - 25,000 rubles. In general, the cost of a bobtail is determined by the prestige of the nursery, the presence of a noble pedigree and the class of a kitten (show, brid or pet).

It is worth noting that this breed also has a fourth class - “newbie”. It is made up of individuals brought directly from the Kuril Islands. The origin of these animals is unknown, but if it’s not important for you to become the owner of a pet with noble ancestors, go for it! In any case, the Kuril Bobtail will become a devoted friend and companion.
